Ring Gen & left a message; rang Menno left a message! Tried Shakiso, some one answered but the line was cut off, will try tomorrow! Nice dinner mainly cooked by C,
Bath, bed! no time for Obama tonight!

Andy, phone conversations, cancelled family conference, King's speech

Got up 9ish, break fast, tidying & hoovering, picked up Eebbs from hockey (Waltham Forest Academy), I drove, not too bad, minor mistakes though, lunch with Andy, I drove us down to car park and walked to the canal with Andy, C & E; Jaal decided to watch things on TV & PC; we fed a squirrel - could see only two, one didn't both to come to eat the nuts; I discussed family matters with Gen & Shefa over the phone; Gen told me arrangements he made with Mum to look after her, to go to hairdresser's every month as soon as the money he sends arrives etc, Garbushe may get government scholarship to study nursing; Shefa told me Balako had a serious raw with Nutole & Kindane, Balako told them off for a lack of motivation and not achieving much in education or any field; but they didn't accept this and refuted as unfounded accusations by Aribi via phone calls; apparently they even didn't say good bye to each other when Balako left; they were divided into the Aribi and Sokora group and the rest; this is a sad news indeed! Balako's first visit in over ten years(?) should have been memorable; the irony of Balako's criticism is that most us have a similar views about his own educational unachivements and unplanned marriage; I personally think, Balako has no moral high ground than his brothers, he has done most of the things a "derailed" teen agers do; how can he criticise them? We cancelled the skype family conference because Shefa, Menno & Nadhi didn't have access to skype; we'll meet next week mainly to discuss the fate of our family hotel in Shakiso; it's run down, the cashier is leaving, no other suitable ashier has been found, no guard, income is low etc etc no family member is closely monitoring the hotel - a problem which we have struggle to solve for money years now! C dropped Andy at the B Horse station, had dinner, dropped Jal & Eb at Marion's and I drove with C to watch "King's Speech", good film; King George iV dies, George V takes over, as the later wants get married to a twice divorcee, unconstitutionally, his younger brother, Bernie, who doesn't want to be a King was forced to do so; due to his stammer he couldn't not deliver speeches, this was extremely traumatic both for him and his audience; his wife tries different speech therapists and finally finds an assertive self-styled therapists, Lionel; who trained/helped the King, King George Vi deliver his very important speech declaring war between the UK & Germany; a number of lesson's can be drawn from the film - the privileged ones can have difficulties, ordinary people can help the privileged, persistence pays off, e.g. the King didn't give up, the therapist wasn't trained, but self-thought out of necessity! we came home just before 10pm, picked J & from Marion's; checked email, sent Dr Balako email replying to his message that he was offered a job as Vice President of Bule Hora University, not confirmed in writing, it's just a verbal offer! It's great news! he could be a role model for thousands if not millions, he's also a hardworking guy and will make a difference, I've encourage him to go for it although a life in a countryside could be challenging; had a glass of rose served to C & I promptly by Ebs, bath, Obama & bed.

SnoreMender made a Miraculous history!

Awaken up by C who sprang from the door side of the bed over me to the other side to see the the alarm clock, it was 8.40am, she wanted to get up at 9am to get J & ready for hockey before Roy would come to drop them off at Billet Rd.

No snoring last night, this is a miracle, 15 years of sleepless nights over! I'm so pleased; C or I don't need to go to Ebs room to sleep on the floor to ensure we sleep. C doesn't feel comfortable with it; takes 2-3 weeks to get used to it says the instruction came with the mernder!
I helped a bit with house chores; did AHEAD giftaid - but made mistakes and I need to work on it tomorrow.
I had a Skype family conference for almost 2 hrs; it went well. The agenda included:

C & the children went to woodcraft fundraising do; I went to an Oromo new year party near Turnpike lane by bus; missed the bus by a second! waited for about 20mns in cold wind doing nothing, boarded a 230 bus around 9.15pm . The party was disappointing, there were about 20 or so youths, Teshale, Tadese and myself. Ferhan and his friend were performing. It was good, had some technical glitches; the young people were dancing quite well; I danced quite a lot. I felt older than most dancers, Teshale and Tadese danced only once. Walked back to Turnpike lane took a 230 bus (at about 00.29hrs) driven by the same Asian driver when I earlier . Everyone was in bed.

First day of teaching in the new year

Waken up at the usual time of 6.45am and got up at 7.20am; shaved, dressed, washed, had a quick breakfast, cancelled walking to Eb's school with him as we have been doing for sometime now, but C gave as a lift with Louise; took train from St James; picked copies of Metro for my students, bought some cakes, fruits and juice for students; caught up with what the students did over the break, discussed vocabulary, tense, asking & answering questions; we used computers/word, dictionary.com and dictionary etc; we discussed and planned exam practice papers; did tutorials with Abdul and Sonia; also dealt with Radha & Hanushka's enquiries.

Came home and sorted out dinner.

Checked eamails and rang Genene.

First day back at work

Woken up at 6.45am by radio' got ready; took Ebs to school, cycled to work (Tottenham); everyone seemed to be back; caught up with K & S; they seemed to have a good time; staff training started at 9.30am mainly preparing to OFSTED inspection and new changes to the JCP programme; submitted paperwork to G; gave registers & barcodes to H; responded to email messages; logged onto the laptop which delayed me and still malfunctioning.

Cycled home and talked to Menno over the phone, she is about to rent her house out and move to a smaller property; did some tidying and preparing for the following day's lesson; kissing Ebs & Jaal; no time to Obama, went to bed around 23.53hrs.

Sunday, 2 January 2011

Getting organised & catching up

Awaken by Ruth J's phone call at 10am. Read Obama a bit while sipping the tea C brought me in bed; Jaal & C went shopping, E & I stayed at home; E did his music practice and watched TV; I tided up, filed documents, checked emails, hoovered the house, played football, swings etc in the park with E. bought phone cards, rang and talked to NAdhi, Ayele, Rod, Ashenafi, Mum, Nagesa & Garbushe; couldn't speak with Idaya others as the line didn't work; rang and told Meno what I heard from others - everyone in USA (celebrated xmas & new year) & home (preparing for Ethi xmas) is fine; Sida & Lelise left for Negele, on their way they will distribute UDA appeal for funds and the receipts, try to find Lel a job; Genene (hotel cashier) wants leave, no hotel guard available, no replacements for both; I promised to send some money for Hadiqo Ferceqo via mum/Garbushe for her to buy food etc; the rooms being built at the back of our Shakiso residence are nearly finished, Nagesa said.

While tidying up documents, I found a note written in Amharic in a green marker. It said, "To dear my son Elfneh Udessa, can we finish everything tomorrow and I send me home immediately in the name of God". It tells all how dad felt about England.

Obama says in his book that his half-sister Auma had got the three things needed to negotiate the modern world, i.e. plans, budget and deadlines! I am gripped by this book. I'm reading Part three, just started his first visit to Kenya. I am increasingly relating to the Obamas in many ways ... the African family bonds, Africans' views of USA or Europe, the descriptions of Nairobi etc etc all too familiar. I will write a brief reaction to this book when I finish reading. Clearly, from the very beginning, Barack Obama was a man on a mission! I'll read it a bit and go to bed after a quick glass of rose and a bath!

New year, new diary 1

We got up quite late, around 10am. Had breakfast, left Jaal behind as she was still not feeling well. Coral, who is desperate for me to pass the driving lessons I've embarrassingly dragged over the last two decades, asked if I want to drive. Accepted reluctantly, as I didn't drive for ages and it was very easily predictable how atrocious ride it was going to be - leading to C's several nervous breakdowns and swiftly/dramatically covering her face every time I vaguely came near any vehicle. We drove to Great Woods, Herts (http://www.fongw.org.uk/) It was cloudy, cold (7oC) and wet day. The paths were full of grey mud and brown dead leaves. It was drizzling lightly, many families with children and dogs, couples, couples with dogs, blocks with dogs, were walking; so many dogs; as usual owners don't control them - this little brown one came dashing and just missed our lunch (sandwiches, Christmas cake, garlic bread, which nobody ate! hot chocolate, apples), but it smeared wet yakie mad all over Eb's & my jeans. I was attacked the worst! The owner lady came and said "It's too young, it thinks that everyone is her friend!" That's not the point! If this woman knows what the dog think why can't she make sure that she does wreck the clothes and peace of people who are not the dog's friends? Later on I thought may she was remarking that there was a horror of hopelessness as to what to do with a little muddy dog jumping and getting all over us with it wet dirty claws! Yeah, we, certainly I could not pretend and show a friendly face. Ebs said he likes Retriever! I really can't be bothered to learn the names of flowers and varieties of dogs etc! We rang Jaal, she was OK.

We came home fivish - The driving was as bad as expected! Jaal was still lying on the sofa and watch the the telly. A tided the house, cooked dinner, had it made and answered a few phone calls and had dinner, wine, children juice, bath, more bed time reading for everyone (more Obama for me) and bed! One of the calls was from Don who spoke to C for long. When they finished she told me that "he was signing me - how helpful and kind I was to him." I had picked him up from Euston Station on 23 Dec; on 24 Dec I took a bus to Straford with Don, Jaal, Lewis & Ebs; met with C, Ruth & Margaret who drove to Stratford; we all rode on DLR to Poplar where all continued to Greenwich but Don and I went Woolch as he want to have a look at some stations and see what kinds of rolling stocks they used; at Woolch Don walked into a big window which misleadingly looked like an open door; I grabbed him when he looked like he was falling back while feeling guilt that I was not look after him well; we had a good Christmas together; on 28 Dec I and Ebbs accompanied Don to the Euston station, while Jaal and C did the same with Margaret in the morning. I do get on well with Don, I like his political jokes and witty anecdotes.

The other call was from Dr Kwame Glevy, a British Ghanaian, lecturing mathematics Education at the Institute of Education. He told me that he has just returned from Ghana after delivering some computers. He has similar dreams to mine, establishing a lifelong learning centre and maybe build it to a college or university later. I asked him what he's done since our last long telephone conversation; asked and suggested various strategies on funding raising, publicity etc. I wished I could just send him a big cheque! He told me he was spending a lot of his money to translate his dreams into reality. He is torn between working for the IOE and focusing on his project which is suffering due to his paid job! The same dilemma I'm in - pursue your dream or ensuring paying the mortgage, look after the family etc?
